Family Nutrition Bureau to Administer Summer Food Service Program
SANTA FE – The Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) Family Nutrition Bureau announced today that it will once again administer the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) in New Mexico to help address the gap in children’s summertime nutritional needs.
The Summer Food Service Program is a federally funded program operated nationally by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The Summer Food Service Program provides nutritious meals to New Mexico’s children during the summer months and is designed to provide children ages 18 years old and under with the same high-quality meals they receive during the school year.
“Many children in our state have a difficult time accessing nutritious meals during the summer, especially if there is no summer school provided in their community,” said Family Nutrition Bureau Chief Cesar Uriarte. “CYFD’s Summer Food Service Program provides children with over 650 meal sites where they can go and get a nutritious meal free of charge.”
CYFD reimburses statewide sponsoring organizations (administering agencies) for the administration and service of meals at approved meal sites, when school is not in session. The meals are free and no registration is required.
In 2013, 60 approved New Mexico sponsoring organizations served two million meals at 670 statewide meal sites. This year, CYFD’s Family Nutrition Bureau estimates that there will be 680 meal sites throughout the state.
“Having access to nutritious meals when school is not in session is very important to many children in our state, “said CYFD Cabinet Secretary Yolanda Deines. “Last year alone, two million meals were served to children throughout New Mexico, and this year we hope to serve even more.”
