Former Foster Youth Wins TeenNick Halo Award

SANTA FE -- Lauren Huichan, 18, of Albuquerque has been named one of four recipients of the TeenNick Halo Award, presented by the national television network in recognition of teenagers' philanthropic leadership in their respective communities. She is one of four youth chosen for this year's awards.

Huichan, a former foster youth in the CYFD system and CASA, is currently the president of the state's foster youth advisory group, Adelante. She is credited with developing worksheets and tools used in current foster family trainings. She will also co-present a workshop on Fostering Futures and mentoring older foster youth at the Children’s Law Institute in January.

Currently a freshman at UNM, she is involved in several community projects and also facilitates grief support at Gerard’s House for foster youth.
