Governor Susana Martinez to Join CYFD Push for New Foster Parents at Los Lunas Heart Gallery Opening

SANTA FE -- Tomorrow, Governor Susana Martinez will deliver a keynote address at the grand opening of the Children, Youth, and Families Department’s (CYFD) latest Heart Gallery -- in Los Lunas, NM. Governor Martinez will address the acute need for foster parents in Valencia County and state-wide. CYFD has identified a drastic shortage of foster parents in the county and is launching a concerted recruitment effort. Over the last year, the number of kids in foster care has doubled while the number of active foster parents has remained flat. Today, there are 211 kids in state care in Valencia County, but only 15 to 20 foster families that are able to take new foster placements.

Governor Martinez will also sign Senate Bill 27, which helps protect adoptive families and birth parents from fraudulent and predatory practices by unlicensed service providers.
